The 8th CSIT World Sports Games are currently underway at sports venues across Corinthia and Arcadia. With Loutraki as the central hub, over 4,500 participants are competing in 35 sports, enjoying the benefits of athletic participation. Among them are athletes who have made their mark in the Olympic Games and continental championships.
One such figure is Alexander Tammert, bronze medalist in discus at the Athens 2004 Olympics. The Estonian champion, who also placed 3rd at the 2006 European Championships in Gothenburg, expressed his enthusiasm for the event.
Also in Greece is former NFL star Tony Mangini, who played in the 1980s for the Los Angeles Express and Washington Federals in the US Football League. Mangini, now CEO of US Football International and a Hall of Fame inductee, stated that his presence in Greece is part of the sport’s global development, a mission that includes participation in CSIT World Sports Games.
The American football matches are taking place at the fully renovated Perachora stadium, where teams from the USA and Mexico stand out. The Loutraki Games feature both popular and lesser-known sports. Popular events include football, basketball, volleyball, beach volleyball, track and field, swimming, tennis, chess, ping pong, wrestling, judo, and padel. Less familiar disciplines in Greece include jump rope, table football, pétanque, and catch’n serve. Tomorrow’s highlight will be the open water swimming competition at Ypanema, Lake Vouliagmeni.
One of the largest delegations is Mexico’s, with over 600 participants. Among them is Cristian Orduña, one of the country’s top padel players. The 37-year-old is also competing in tennis and praised both the padel facilities and the hospitality:
“Everyone is helpful and flexible. The venues are excellent. We are truly grateful for the hospitality.”
The official opening ceremony took place on June 4th with a spectacular show at “Christos Thodis” Municipal Stadium. More than 4,500 athletes from 60 countries joined the parade and enjoyed a cultural and artistic program. The Games will conclude tomorrow, June 7th, with the Closing Ceremony.
The 8th World Sports Games are co-organized by the Hellenic Organization for Company Sports & Health, the Municipality of Loutraki – Perachora – Agioi Theodoroi, and the International Workers and Amateurs in Sports Confederation (CSIT), with SPORTCAMP as the operator.
The competitions are held at the modern facilities of SPORTCAMP and municipal sports venues provided by the Municipality of Loutraki – Perachora – Agioi Theodoroi, such as “Christos Thodis” Stadium, “G. Galanopoulos” Indoor Hall, and the Municipal Swimming Pool of Loutraki, as well as venues offered by the municipalities of Corinth, Velo-Vocha, and Tripoli.
The Games are supported by the Region of Peloponnese, the Municipalities of Corinth, Velo-Vocha, and Tripoli, and Loutraki Tourism Organization. They are held under the auspices of the Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs & Sports / General Secretariat of Sports and the Corinth Chamber of Commerce.
